FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

How Does The Veteran Get
A Government Job?

Question:
My spouse is a disabled Air Force Veteran who got out of the military to support me in my own Air Force flying career. When she got out of the military she was classified as 40% disabled, which gave her what I understand is 10 point for GS rated jobs for the government. She is here with me at ******* AFB and is having a very difficult time finding work that is suitable to what she did in the military. How does she get into the system and get in the GS rating with these benefits that she supposedly has? She was an E-4 and very well decorated and at the time of her separation she was successfully doing an E-7 or E-8 job of which she was also decorated for. I just don't see how the system is going to work for her! Also, when she applied for "Vocational Rehabilitation," they said she was totally employable with her qualifications. Where do we go from here?

Answer:
Getting just about any job in the U.S. Government today is difficult. There are so many qualified people out there that will never be selected for one reason or another. Many people have heard (and feel) that the government jobs are plentiful and they will offered a job easily. Nothing could be further from the truth. They still need to compete and that means getting a very concise and complete SF171 or OF-612 and apply for open vacancies. They must also know the rules for the different programs they are qualified for.

Have her go to http://www.opm.gov/veterans/index.html and really read and understand what she is really qualified for. She must never give up hope and keep reapplying for everything that she, as a veteran, is qualified for. Don't be discouraged and MAKE SURE THAT 171 or 612 IS A WORK OF ART!
