AC Hotel in Times Square Installs Custom Boon Edam Revolving Door

AC Hotel in Times Square Installs Custom Boon Edam Revolving Door | #TpromoCom #Door #Hotel #Security | A Boon Edam BoonAssist manual revolving door met all of those requirements and more for the revolving door required at the AC Hotels by Marriott brand, located on West 40th Street.

May 8, 2019 – Times Square in New York City is arguably one of the most popular attractions in the world, with restaurants, stores, energetic crowds and pulsing lights from towering digital billboards. It’s also home to AC Hotel New York Times Square, a recently opened property that’s part of the AC Hotels by Marriott brand, located on West 40th Street.

The one-year-old hotel has 21 floors with 290 rooms and suites, with options including high views, floor-to-ceiling windows and full balconies. It also has more than 3,500 square feet of event space, a 24/7 fitness center, an AC Library, and Castell Rooftop Lounge on the 21st floor. The hotel, which was designed by Helpern Architects of New York City, is detailed with original artwork in the hotel’s shared spaces – from sculptures to abstract paintings – by a mix of local, national and international artists. The photography in the guestrooms is by Richard Silver, featuring NYC’s iconic architecture. OTO Development, part of The Johnson Group, owns and operates AC Hotel New York Times Square.

A Main Entrance with Style and Function
On average, more than 1,000 people enter the hotel each day, says General Manager Ben Britton. The property’s design team sought a main entrance solution that would not only accommodate pedestrian traffic, but would also fit with the hotel’s soaring glass exterior and all-white entrance with its large, cantilevered awning extending over the sidewalk. The solution also needed to filter outside noise and other sensory distractions to help create an “oasis of calm, a retreat from the New York City’s hustle and bustle,” Britton says. In addition, the entrance solution needed to coordinate with the overall hotel brand, based on providing a harmonious, modern and discerning guest experience.

A Boon Edam BoonAssist manual revolving door met all of those requirements and more, including a custom-made, all-white color that matches the exterior entrance decor. The door’s dimensions are built to complement the scale of the entry at 10 feet diameter and almost 14 feet tall. “Due to the size of the door, we chose the manual assist option to reduce strain on the motor,” explains Britton. “The door has a weight to it that provides a sense of grandeur as you enter the hotel, while the power assist feature makes it easy for our guests to use.”

Revolving Doors Enhance the Sensory Experience
The revolving door also helps ensure that guests are connected with the full experience that the hotel aims to provide. “We are very keen on providing a sensory experience,” Britton says. “The lobby exudes the AC Hotels brand signature scent. We work to ensure the lobby space is quiet and calm so that our business guests can conduct a business conversation. Considering the environment outside on the street, the revolving door helps us achieve these goals – it also provides a brief transition experience for the customer as they pass through it, sort of ’washing the street off of you,’” Britton observes.

Britton notes that maintenance of the Boon Edam revolving door has been seamless, with no issues to date. The hotel’s engineering team is fully trained on the door’s operation, including its regular maintenance schedule.

The hotel’s operations team is pleased with how the Boon Edam revolving door controls pedestrian traffic and creates an ideal transition into the peaceful lobby; the design team is happy with how the door design and special color add to the beauty of the hotel exterior.

“AC Hotel Times Square has gotten a lot of attention both nationally and internationally,” Britton says. “I believe that this type of sleek, modern design is the future. Hotel chains will update their design elements to be more in line with what our hotel has already accomplished. Boon Edam provided a great solution.”

The Roadshow Brings In-Depth Education Direct to Partners

For the 2019 training program, Boon Edam’s Training Manager, Zac Ellett, has created an improved curriculum which addresses the top five issues seen in the field for each product type, in addition to general installation, service and maintenance instruction. The Roadshow will stop in at least a dozen locations this year, focusing on areas where a large number of installations are about to occur. For this reason, the Roadshow schedule for the quarter will be released at the beginning of that quarter.

Roadshow trainings are unique in that a specially-engineered, full-size security revolving door, security portal and/or optical turnstile are sent to each training location. Pharm Research Associates Choose Boon Edam Tourlock to Secure their Entry

Pharm Research Associates Choose Boon Edam Tourlock to Secure their Entry | #TpromoCom #AccessControl #UseCase | Pharm Research Associates Ltd. is a research center located in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1996, the center conducts commercial, physical and biological research and development.

At their Swansea-based facility, Pharm Research Associates determined the need to upgrade the entrance door they had in place, which was no longer fulfilling their needs. Having successfully installed a Boon Edam Crystal TQ revolving door at their Reading head office, the company turned once again to Boon Edam for expert advice on upgrading their Swansea facility.

“The original door had been installed by another entrance provider,” said Neil Simons, National Sales Manager, Boon Edam Limited UK. “Not only was it an older product, it also did not actually serve the true purpose of what our client required.”

Access Controlled Entry

Pharmaceutical companies require enhanced levels of security due to the sensitive data stored on site. There is always a critical need to monitor and control who is entering the building, to prevent the risks associated with unauthorized access. Beyond an access control solution to support the company’s high security requirements, there was a need to control the flow of people entering and exiting the building.

The center worked closely with Boon Edam to establish potential threats and ensure the appropriate level of security was incorporated into the new entry solution. It was important for the entrance solution to be correct, not only to meet the building’s requirements, but also to fit with the existing culture.

Confident and Thorough Evaluation

Boon Edam’s team met with the client to present a range of possibilities and alleviate on-site personnel concerns about the perceived access issues brought on by heightened security measures. After evaluating the range of entry options, the client chose Boon Edam’s automatic Tourlock 180+90 security revolving door with an aluminum finish for its entrance.

“We had worked with Pharm Research Associates on their headquarters in Reading, so we knew the client well and were able to recommend the best solution for their needs,” said Simons. “With the facility storing sensitive clinical data, the Tourlock 180+90 was the perfect fit. Not only does it provide a stronger, more technical security solution for the building, it also allows for higher throughput levels.”

The Tourlock 180+90 prevents unauthorized entry attempts (tailgating and piggybacking), while supporting simultaneous, bi-directional throughput – a level of security that precisely matched the client’s needs.

The project took eight months from confirmation to installation, and despite some bad weather, Boon Edam installed the new door in only four days. Boon Edam also provided a complimentary customer orientation, to inform the management and staff how to properly use and care for the door throughout its lifetime.

Liberty Global Elevates Entrance Security with Boon Edam Turnstiles, Security Revolving Doors

Liberty Global Elevates Entrance Security with Boon Edam Turnstiles, Security Revolving Doors | #TpromoCom #Security #AccessControl # | Liberty Global deployed Boon Edam’s Lifeline Speedlane Swing optical turnstiles, a “single point of entry” strategy, at each of the seven buildings in Schiphol-Rijk.

“We did have security at the main entrance, but it could not always prevent people from entering our central hall unnoticed,” said Simon Kuitert, Corporate Security Manager at Liberty Global. “Moreover, there were several entrances where visitors could enter along with employees, without being seen. Often, they were not yet in restricted or private spaces, but we would want to know who comes in our building. That is why we introduced ‘single point of entry’ during a recent renovation.”

Boon Edam’s New Circlelock Portal Converts Fire-Rated Swinging Doors into Mantrap Solutions

Boon Edam’s New Circlelock Portal Converts Fire-Rated Swinging Doors into Mantrap Solutions | #TpromoCom #FireDoors #ManTrap #CodeCompliance |  The Circlelock Combi stops piggybacking and enables multi-factor authentication to protect assets from intruders.

Boon Edam Inc., a global leader in security entrances and architectural revolving doors, today announced is the launch of a new security mantrap portal solution, the Circlelock Combi. This unique, “half portal” solution helps security executives prevent unauthorized entry into high security areas currently using fire-rated swinging doors. The Combi will be on display in Boon Edam’s booth (#8037) at the upcoming ISC West exhibition in Las Vegas, NV from April 11-13.

To read the remainder of this press release, click here. (scroll down)

The Inherent Risk of Swinging Doors
Boon Edam designed the Circlelock Combi as a convenient retrofit option to address the risk that exists with any type of swinging door – once a swinging door is opened by an authorized user, any number of people may also gain access to a secure area, which is known as “tailgating” or “piggybacking”.

Preventing Intrusion while Maintaining Integrity
Many facilities use fire-rated swing doors to protect data and assets from destruction by fire, but this type of door cannot prevent tailgating or piggybacking. The Circlelock Combi attaches to an existing fire-rated door, converting it immediately into a mantrap solution that prevents piggybacking 24/7 and eliminates the need for manned supervision, all while maintaining the fire-rated benefits of the swing door. The Combi also saves considerable space compared to traditionally-built mantrap vestibules that use standard walls and two swinging doors.

The Circlelock Combi is a cylindrical solution that has a single sliding door on one end and an opening on the other end that is mounted to an existing wall and swing door. The Combi uses Boon Edam’s StereoVision2™ detection technology in the ceiling to scan the compartment and ensure a user is alone prior to unlocking the swing door. Security managers can choose to prevent piggybacking for both inbound and outbound traffic.

Enabling Multi-Factor Authorization
The Circlelock Combi enables deployment of multi-factor authentication to ensure the identity of a confirmed, lone user. Users can present their first credential to enter the portal and then a second biometric credential (such as an iris scanner, facial or hand recognition), to unlock the second door. Virtually any verification technology can be mounted inside the Combi on an optional, floor-to-ceiling post.

Applications and Throughput
The Circlelock Combi can process five to six people per minute and is ideal for interior, sensitive locations such as data centers, government buildings, airports, legal or patient record areas, executive suites, and more.

At ISC West, Boon Edam will have the Circlelock Combi available for demonstrations with a two-factor authentication scenario using an AMAG Symmetry card reader to enter the portal, followed by facial scanning technology from StoneLock Pro® to open the swing door. Attendees are encouraged to stop by to see live demonstrations.
