The Third Secret
of Fatima

17 May 2001

On 26 June 2000, the Vatican released the Third Secret of Fatima. For those who are not acquainted with this famous event, Christ's Holy mother, Mary, appeared to three young children near Fatima, Portugal in 1917. On 13 May, the Holy Mother told of terrible things that would most certainly take place if her instructions were not closely followed.

Why is this relivant to Christians of all faiths, as well as the rest of the world? Because within the words of Jesus' Holy Mother we find not only undisputable truths concerning past historical events, but events yet to come--events that no human being could have known at that point in time! If the Holy Mother's instructions are not fulfilled in every detail, these future events have the potential to affect each and every man, woman, and child on this planet, no matter what their religious affiliation, or lack thereof, may be.

Three young children, Lucia de Santos, born 22 March 1907; Francisco Marto, born 11 June 1908; and his sister, Jacinta Marto, born 11 March 1910, experienced three angelic visitations throughout 1916. The first took place in the spring, the second during the summer, and the third in the fall of the year.

During the first visitation, an angel of intense white, in the form of a young boy of about 14 years of age, instructed the children on how to pray. He said to pray as such:

"My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, I love Thee. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, nor adore, nor hope, nor love Thee."

He ended his instruction with these words, as told by Lucia later in life:

"Pray like that. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications."

During the summer of 1916, the children were visited again by an angel that claimed to be "the angel of Portugal."

According to Lucia's own testimony, "The second apparition must have been at the height of summer, when the heat of the day was so intense that we had to take the sheep home before noon and only let them out again in the early evening. We went to spend the siesta hours in the shade of the trees which surrounded the well that I have already mentioned several times. Suddenly, we saw the same Angel right beside us," said Lucia.

The angel replied, "What are you doing? Pray, pray very much! The Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary have designs of mercy on you. Offer prayers and sacrifices constantly to the Most High."

On the third visitation the children were bowed, heads touching the ground, praying "My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, I love Thee. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, nor adore, nor hope, nor love Thee," when a bright light shown all about them.

"We sprang up to see what was happening, and beheld the Angel. He was holding a chalice in his left hand, with the Host suspeended above it, from which some drops of blood fell into the chalice," said Lucia. "Leaving the chalice suspended in the air, the Angel knelt down beside us and made us repeat three times:

"Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the sacrileges, outrages and indifference by which He Himself is offended. And through the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners."

The Angel then prompted the children to partake of the Eucharist:

"Take and drink the body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men! Make reparation for their crimes and console your God," the angel instructed them. He then fell prostrate on the ground and prayed to the Most Holy Trinity, as he had instructed the children. After having done this several times, the angel disappeared.

This was not the last of the heavenly visitations that the three children experienced. The following year, 1917, Christ's mother, Mary, appeared to the children on three different occasions.
