I can easily point to times in my own life when our Father in Heaven rescued me from several calamities that should have either taken my life or injured me severely. It was during these times that the Lord must have dispatched his Angles to rescue me. How can I say this with certainty? Because before not only my eyes, but also those of others, the very laws of nature appeared to uproot and alter, just long enough to clear me from injury or death.
Allow me to begin by reciting one of my earliest recollections, and perhaps my most personal recollection.
I was about 14 to 16 years old, sitting at a picnic table in my back yard playing with a glass Isaly's milk bottle into which I lit and dropped several firecrackers. I liked the sound that it made (an echo). Eventually the bottle exploded, shattering into a million pieces. When it happened, all that I could do was shut my eyes.
Sitting there for a few moments with my eyes still closed; I must have examined the surface of my body with my mind. I can recall my surprise at finding there was no pain to speak of. Upon opening my eyes, I was struck by the scene now before me. Glass shards of all sizes, from that of mere dust to large pieces, were everywhere around me--except a precise triangular area beginning at where the bottom of the bottle still stood extending to either side of me. Even on the bench on both sides.
What a stupid thing to do, I thought to myself.
You could have taken a ruler and placed it along either line and never have seen one speck of glass out of place--and yet I was entirely untouched. I sat there and marveled at what I saw, as I still do to this day. Over some areas along the two lines were mounds of fine glass dust, as deep as an eighth of an inch, stacked up against what appeared to be an invisible, protective barrier.
I knew that what I was seeing just could not, or should not be, but there it was before me. It was probably then that I figured out that I was being protected for some reason I did not yet understand. Someone had intervened. I knew that it had to be an angel for no one else, other than Jesus or our Father, could interfer like that with the natural laws that govern the material world. I know this is true with ever fiber of my being.
Like most folks, if this was the only incident in my life where the normal, ordinary laws of nature were altered in order to save me from death or injury, I might have passed the entire event over without another thought, but it was only one of many situations that I encountered over the course of my life.
Probably the most remarkable of them all took place in the early 1970's when I had an auto accident. To begin with, the conditions, which caused the accident, were such that I still question how the entire situation took place. Just as I approached a curve to the left, headed south on an old state highway, I suddenly, without any warning, found my vehicle and myself fully sideways across the on coming northbound lane. I then fishtailed to the right onto the side of the road and then back again, fully across the northbound lane.
This fishtailing continued several times until I struck the rear side of a vehicle in the northbound lane. The driver, having seen early on my difficulties, had stopped his vehicle in the middle of his lane where he waited to see what would happen next. After striking his car, my vehicle straightened up and then headed for a ditch on the East Side of the highway.
From the moment the car left the highway, going airborne, everything changed from real time to a state of slow motion. I recall just before striking the windshield with my forehead, I felt something sweep across my face, removing my glasses. Then, without any explanation, I deliberately reached down and pulled the door handle on my door. It was then that I felt an indescribable pressure on my right shoulder that pushed me from the vehicle.
As I slowly exited the car, I deliberately looked back at the vehicle, as it was about to strike the ground. It was headed for a large tree. Recalling the lessons I had learned in gym class as an elementary school student, I tucked my head down and did several rolls into the weeds. Looking back during one of those rolls I saw my car wrap itself around the tree on the driver's side. The driver of the vehicle I had struck helped me into his car and he took me to the hospital where a baby doctor in the ER shoddily sewed my torn lips. This was the end of my musical aspirations.
Because of that accident, my lips were damaged and they never healed entirely right. This prevented me from realizing my hopes of moving to New York or some other major city where I wanted to play my trumpet--perhaps in a jazz band. Up until then I was very capable on my instrument, as I had listened to, and patterned my personal style after Al Hurt and Herb Alpert (differing styles I might add). I was never to play with the same degree of professionalism again. Thus, this accident saw to it that I remained home.
I cannot tell you how different my life would certainly have been if that accident had not taken place, for I was very capable of almost any tune played by Herb Alpert or Al Hurt. I had patterned my dual-style after both of these men. All you would do is to to verify this claim is to ask anyone who knew me at the time.
This is not where the story ends, however. Just a year or so ago, while talking with the driver of the vehicle I had hit, I discovered that there was far more to that accident than I had at first known. What he told me totally blew me away.
Ron King, the driver, told me that after I hit his vehicle, and as my car wrapped itself around the tree, he thought to himself, What am I going to tell his mom and dad? Ron said he knew I was still in the vehicle and that I had to be dead. He said that when I came up out of those weeds, blood all down my white shirt, he was shocked.
He told me that he never saw me come out of the vehicle, and he was watching very closely, he said. However, when my vehicle had gone airborne, he did see what looked like a white cloth come out of the driver's door--but the door had opened and closed so fast that he knew that it could not be a human being--but we know it was. He said the door was only open a second, if that. I asked him if he was sure, all these years later. He told me that he could never forget the details behind this incident because he still marvels over it all these years later.
There are other such incidents where not only I noted distinct and impossible changes in the laws that govern this material world, but others that were present saw them as well. Obviously, there was a life for me to lead, children to be born and raised, and grandchildren to love and influence. This I have done and continue to do as my six grandchildren continue to grow. There may be other considerations in this regard that no one could possibly imagine. The same could be said for each one of us I'm sure.
Do angels actually go about doing good for mankind? Let's take a quick look at what the Bible says about angels.
Psalms 8:5 - "For thou hast made him (man) a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour."
This passage tells us that God made the angels such that they are superhuman (above the human condition/state), compared to mankind.
Mark 12:25 - "For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven."
This passage tells us that angels are not made of mortal flesh, as we know it. It also tells us that human beings, when they pass on, if they believed in Jesus Christ, that He is the Son of the Most High, that they will become as angels, perhaps doing what angels do. One wonderful priest that comes to mind is Padre Pio who lived his entire life for Christ in Italy, bearing and suffering the same wounds that Jesus did from His death on the cross.
For an avid description of one type of angel, we turn to the Book of Ezekiel.
Ezekiel 1:5-14 - "...out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass. And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings.
"Their wings were joined on to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle.
"Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies. And they went every one straightforward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went. As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning."
Some angels must look like ordinary men.
Genesis 19:1-3: "And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
"And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
"And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat."
Quite obviously, and this is my point, there are so many kinds of Angels that it's very possible that the word "Angel" actually refers to "Station" or "Rank" in vocation (life work/design), rather than "Species" (category of a being's physical or spiritual nature). Also, Angels that "eat" may seem a bit hard to believe, considering the concept that most of us share regarding their "spiritual" nature. However, this goes to demonstrate that we do not fully understand the nature of what we so often call the "spiritual."
To further demonstrate this point, in "The Layman's Bible Encyclopedia," we are told that
"The Hebrew word for 'spirit' is 'ruach.' In the Old Testament it frequently means 'wind.' The Greek equivalent 'pneuma' is used in this sense only twice in the New Testament. These terms are also used to denote 'breath,' the vital stuff of life in default of which man ceases to live."
In conclusion, may I say that in due time each of us will know the answer to these and other riddles. In the mean time, we must trust what we know to be true; we must trust what we know within our heart to be right. To follow any other philosophy would open us to the danger of the second and final death. Praise Jesus, and may our Father's most Perfect Will be realized on earth as it certainly is in Heaven.
