Lookie, The Sky Is Falling!
The Sky Is Falling!

By Al Colombo

According to the Associated Press, "A mile-wide asteroid could smash Earth, causing widespread death and destruction, and "we wouldn't even know it was coming," an expert told a congressional panel today.
Such an asteroid, striking the planet at thousands of miles an hour, would "threaten the future of modern civilization" by darkening the sky for a year, causing widespread starvation by destroying food crops and directly or indirectly killing millions of people, said Clark R. Chapman, an asteroid expert with the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio," so Chapman testified before the House Science Committee's panel on space and aeronautics.

Would knowing that an asteroid is heading our way be of much value to us, really? What would our options be once we learn this?

No doubt, men like Clark Chapman will continue to watch the skies for killer asteroids and other objects that they say seriously threaten life on planet Earth. Perhaps they and we are acting on a secret wish to act out what we see and hear on the movie screen. Perhaps we want to feel the terror and smell the fear we have witnessed thereon time after time--compliments of Hollywood who specializes in violence and death (what a legacy!).

What did we do all these centuries before this without our astronomers to warn us about killer asteroids? What did we do without them watching the night skies for the very bullet that could end our lives?

Perhaps what we really need to do is sit down, take a deep breath, and then seriously think about all of this.

Words of Moses

  1. Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day.
  2. But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.
  3. And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.
  4. As the nations which the Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lord your God.
Deuteronomy 8:11-20
