According to the Associated Press, "A mile-wide asteroid could smash Earth, causing widespread death and destruction, and "we wouldn't even know it was coming," an expert told a congressional panel today.
Such an asteroid, striking the planet at thousands of miles an hour, would "threaten the future of modern civilization" by darkening the sky for a year, causing widespread starvation by destroying food crops and directly or indirectly killing millions of people, said Clark R. Chapman, an asteroid expert with the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio," so Chapman testified before the House Science Committee's panel on space and aeronautics.
Would knowing that an asteroid is heading our way be of much value to us, really? What would our options be once we learn this?
Perhaps we could elect a black President who could lead the world toward the building of underground living quarters where 2 million people in the U.S. would be given the right to survive the impact.
Perhaps the rest of us could grab a motorcycle, our 14-year-old bride, her baby brother, and head for the highest hill in suburbia.
Perhaps America could send up a fleet of shuttles equipped with a special propulsion unit to plant nuclear bombs on the surface of the asteroid to break it up into itsy-bitsy pieces.
Perhaps we could go to the network center and sacrifice our seat on a helicopter, allowing the head anchor and her daughter to go in our place.
(Does this sound like a movie or what? :-)
Perhaps we could put our heads between our legs and kiss our butts goodbye!
Or, perhaps we could do the right thing and pray, trusting in the Supreme God who made us and everything we see around us!
(Is that too simplistic and nontechnical?)
No doubt, men like Clark Chapman will continue to watch the skies for killer asteroids and other objects that they say seriously threaten life on planet Earth. Perhaps they and we are acting on a secret wish to act out what we see and hear on the movie screen. Perhaps we want to feel the terror and smell the fear we have witnessed thereon time after time--compliments of Hollywood who specializes in violence and death (what a legacy!).
What did we do all these centuries before this without our astronomers to warn us about killer asteroids? What did we do without them watching the night skies for the very bullet that could end our lives?
Perhaps what we really need to do is sit down, take a deep breath, and then seriously think about all of this.
Instead of rewarding Hollywood for inciting fear and terror,
Instead of relying on ourselves and the technology to save us, a technology that we have obviously copied from someone elsewhere (that genetic "tree of knowledge"),
Instead of the Congress paying billions of dollars to act out Hollywood movies in real life,
Perhaps we need to yield to the Will of that Grand Spirt who created us; God, our Father in heaven.
Words of Moses
Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his
commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this
day.
But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee
power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy
fathers, as it is this day.
And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after
other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day
that ye shall surely perish.
As the nations which the Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye
perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lord your God.
