Thank you for your e-mail expressing your opposition to the President's Executive Order regarding the American Heritage Rivers Initiative. I regret the delay in responding to you, as my office has received an unusually large volume of mail over the past budget cycle.

I share your concern about this program, and threfore as Chairman of the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee I included language in the House version of the fiscal year 1999 bill that would ensure congressional control of this initiative.

For your information I am enclosing a copy of the language from the House report addressing the American Heritiage Rivers Initiative. Again, thank you for your letter. I appreciate hearing from you on this matter.
