Dear Mr. Colombo;
Thank you for contacting my office in opposition to additional gun control legislation. I appreciate hearing your views on this important topic.
The debate over gun control laws continues to be one of the most controversial in national policy making. Those in favor of passing restrictive laws on the ownership of firearms claim to do so in the hopes of reducing crime. However, these laws often result in over broad prohibitions that greatly affect law-abiding gun owners while failing to stop criminals from using guns to perpetrate their crimes. I am strongly in favor of preventing violent crimes and punishing the criminals who use firearms to commit them, but these laws must be effective, enforced, and should not disproportionately burden and rights of other citizens.
In light of the recent school shootings in Littleton, Colorado, and Conyers, Georgia, many are inclined to remedy these problems plaguing our society with additional regulations that place tighter restrictions on guns. Be certain that I will carefully review any new legislation when considering future laws that will affect firearm possession. Our country has a long tradition of private gun ownership for legal purposes and I will continue to respect this tradition.
With best wishes, I am
Sincerely,
Ralph Regula, M.C.
