Fact Sheet:   Kosovo


Kosovo is in the southernmost part of the Republic of Serbia, in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It is bounded by Montenegro and Albania on the west, and by Macedonia on the south. Its area is 10,887 sq km (8,304 sq mi), and its population is 1,954,747 (1991). Ethnic Albanians form about 82 percent of Kosovo's inhabitants. The economy is mainly agricultural, although the Trepca region has lead mines, and there is a metallurgical complex at Glogovac. Pristina (1987 est. pop., 125,400) is the capital city. The district of Metohija is in the western part of the province, around the town of Pec.
