Dear Senator Voinovich:
Thank you for your letter of August 11 concerning your constituent being told the State Department will ban the import of gas masks.
We have been in communication with Mr. Eric Newhouse of your office about this matter. At the present time, the Department of State has no ban on or objection to the import of gas masks as a matter of general policy.
While an import permit is rerquired because these items are defense articles, the State Department has no foreign policy concerns regarding their import. Final authority to approve such permits, however, rests with the Treasury Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and it should be contacted for further information.
I hope this information is useful in responding to your constituent's concerns. If we may be of further assistance with this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.
