Senator John Glenn on
The Heritage River Advisory Committee Executive Order

June 9, 1998

Dear. Mr. Colombo

Thank you for contacting me regarding this protection of our nation's rivers.

As a United States Senator, I have been a consistent supporter of legislation to improve the quality of our nation's rivers. I have voted for the Clean Water Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act and other legislation that promotes and protects our nation's water supply. To this end, I have supported President Clinton's designation of ten American rivers as American Heritage Rivers.

Introduced by President Clinton in his 1997 State of the Union Address, the American Heritage Rivers Program provides for the annual designation of ten rivers that are significant to the nation's culture, history, or economic development. To qualify, communities must present a plan to improve the river and must demonstrate broad support for its implementation, In return, the river communities will receive federal assistance to reduce pollution and will be provided with a federal representative to assist in that goal. In addition to federal support, it is hoped that the nationwide attention focused on these ten rivers will attract corporate and foundation sponsors. All federal funding for this program will come from existing federal sources.

Clean rivers are vital to our nation's health and prosperity. I will continue to support legislation to improve America's rivers.

I appreciate having the benefit of your views on this issue

Best Regards,

JG:ds
