Al Colombo's Letter to
The Honorable Congressman Owens
on HR787,
Removal Of Handguns

March 3, 1997

Honorable Representative Owens;

After reading bill H.R. 787, I am surprised and dismayed that you, a Congressman, sworn to uphold the U.S. Constitution, would attempt to initiate this bill calling for the removal of handgun ownership rights. Have we forgotten the lessons that Nazi Germany taught us in the 30s and 40s?

The comments in this bill regarding criminal acts with handguns and such is highly exagerated and overplayed. Yes, people die from handguns. But, many, many more people die from automobiles. Will Congress elect to initiate a bill to eliminate car ownership? I doubt that. And, regarding criminals with handguns, this law will not bother them in the least, for the majority of criminals probably laugh at the mere idea of using a gun in the commission of a crime that they purchased over the counter using their personal name, even if it were possible. The only people that this bill, if it should become law, is honest, law-abiding citizens who will have nothing else to protect themselves with. Then, the criminals will eventually realize that there is very little to fear from homeowners, so they'll not be as cautious.

This bill, combined with H.R. 186, will serve no other purpose than to assure a long list of those who have or had guns. In Germany all Hitler had to do was follow up on the gun registration list and then go to each home to collect them. The removal of gun ownership is even more detrimental to our freedoms because it, along with subsequent bills aimed at disarming citizens of their right to own long-barrel rifles, will do none other than upset the balance of power that our forefathers saw fit to institute.

I would also like you to know that I do not like guns; I, in fact abhor them. But, I also realize that there was a very good reason why the founding fathers of this nation provided for this right in writing.

Under the FOIA, I would kindly like to know who or what group provided you with this bill that you presented to Congress. I intend to cc: this letter to my own Congressional representatives.

Best Regards,

Allan B. Colombo
