In late July, the United Way of Southeastern Rhode Island announced that it would cut off its financial support to "organizations that discriminate for any reason, including sexual orientation," reported UPI. This would mean that the Narragansett Council of the Boy Scouts of America would lose $200,000, unless it signed a pledge "promising to adhere to the [diversity] directive" issued by the United Way's board in Providence.
