RE: H.R. 4982,
To repeal the Federal charter of the Boy Scouts of America.
Dear Honorable Congressman [NAME HERE];
House bill H.R. 4982, introduced by Representative Lynn Woolsey, 6th district, California, seeks to repeal the federal charter granted the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) by the Congress of the United States in 1916. As you may already know, the Supreme Court recently decided in favor of the BSA in regards to the exclusion of gay scout leaders. According to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, forcing this organization to accept gay scoutmasters “would significantly burden the organization’s right to oppose or disfavor homosexual conduct."
The scouts have long stood for moral, ethical, and Godly values. They are a patriotic organization that has done far more good by way of mentoring than any of us can know. Representative Wooley's effort to derail the BSA appears to be in retaliation for the Supreme Court's recent decision favoring this organization's right to free assembly and expression, as protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
When H.R. 4982 comes up for a vote on the House floor, I trust that you will not vote in its favor. To do so would be Unamerican. In the mean time, I would like to have the benefit of hearing your stance on this issue. This will help me make critical decisions this fall when I cast my votes at the ballot box.
Thank you for hearing my concerns and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Regards,
