Lighting Our Way:
Why I Appreciate Light Over Darkness

In the beginning there was nothing but darkness across what was. God spoke and there was light, given off by the sun, actually many suns, but we're talking about only one sun-our sun. To assure the presence of light during the night, God allowed for the moon, so by day God provided man with hope and assurance by having the sun light the day and during the night he had the moon expose the darkness.

The cycle of day and night has been going on for a long time now. We've grown accustom to the light of day as well as what little light there may be at night. Each night we're assured that tomorrow will bring a renewed sun full of life and light to show our way as we move about our day. And by night He chases our despair away through some degree of light to show the night.

Other than at the beginning when darkness permeated what there was of creation before God spoke, has there ever been a time when man was without light for any appreciable time? Most of us would have to say no, as the cycle of the sun and moon are written in stone as each sphere circles the Earth over a 24 hour period.

Truth be know, there was a period of time where certain men were forced to live without the light of day or night for a period of about 3 days. We're told about this in Exodus, Chapter 10 in the NIV (New International Version) of the Old Testament:

10:21 Then the Lord said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness will spread over Egypt - darkness that can be felt."

10:22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days.

10:23 No one could see anyone else or leave his place for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.

10:24 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, "Go, worship the Lord, even your women and children may go with you; only leave your flocks and herds behind."

10:25 But Moses said, "You must allow us to have sacrifices and burnt offerings to present to the Lord our God.

Can you begin to imagine living through three days in total darkness? God has never done that to anyone else that I'm aware of. He certainly hasn't done that to modern man in modern times. So, everyday when the sun rises, I thank God; and each evening when I look up and see the moon, I thank God.
